Nicosia (Lefkosia) by Holiday Island Cyprus

Strolling through the streets in Nicosia, visitors soon become aware of the citys cosmopolitan ambiance and unique character, which is a wonderful blend of history and tradition with a good sprinkling of Europes latest fashions.

Nicosia is the capital city of Cyprus but is relatively small compared to other capitals. Nevertheless, it can still proudly state that it is the administrative, commercial and financial focus for the Island, as well as being; a popular meeting place for business conferences and the host of a myriad of cultural events. Nicosia is the only main town that is situated inland and consequently the summer temperatures are higher and the winter ones lower by a few degrees.

Today the citys colourful facades and warm friendliness hide the sadness and heartbreak that followed the July 1974 Turkish invasion which affected every family and today Nicosia remains the only divided capital in the world.

Within its famous star-shaped Venetian city walls, time has almost stood still and it is fun to wander along the winding streets, admiring the different architectural styles (with several buildings currently being renovated to their former glory). Laiki Yitonia, which means the folk neighbourhood has a variety of traditional craft workshops where you can pause awhile to watch all types of craftsman from shoe and chair makers to Jewellers, all continuing their craft just as their grandparents did before them. For visitors to Nicosia, there are several walking tours of the old city that are available from the Cities tourist offices.

Outside the old city walls, the modern city of Nicosia has blossomed with new buildings, all the well known European brands in the local shops (at reasonable prices), great concerts performed by well known orchestras and visiting stars including Diana Ross, Elton John to name just a couple!

By evening, the city is transformed by its galaxy of international restaurants and coffee shops where friends and family gather to sample a variety of cuisines including traditional Cypriot, Indian, Japanese, Mexican and Thai.
